Conservation

This is our main activity.

As progress is made, I will add details here.

As of May 2026, I have set up some nest boxes and a sound system on my own house. We will see what happens, when swifts start to prospect for a new house. The sound system has been quite amazing. I never thought that a bird could be called in with a waterproof hot tub speaker! Their genetic programming is very strong, even though its millions of years old. They try to nest together to provide protection by numbers against the few predators they might encounter. Playing their own sounds makes them think that your house is a large commune and they will circle you and check for nesting spots around your house. What other bird or animal can do that?

This is the early part of the season, so most swifts already have partners AND an existing nest. A lone swift has been coming to my house for the last few days and has been flying up to the box with interest. Maybe it has been exiled or lost it’s mate, and might be starting again. Today It was with another swift, so maybe it’s got a new mate. Time will tell.
